A Visit

This poem is an English translation selected from the first section, "A Visit" (巡礼), of the Chinese poetry journal Workers' Poetry Selection (《打工诗选刊》).

The Wage Seeker

Truth is,
he only needed to climb halfway up
the tower crane's height
before he could jump.

Yet he kept climbing, step after step,
as if each step upward
brought him a foot closer to justice.

The December wind bit cold, the sky silent.
Not until he completed his final move
did the earth consent to take his body in.

About the Author: Yang Xiang, penname: Proletarian Migrant Worker, born in the late 1970s in Songtao, Guizhou. Published short pieces in several southern magazines a decade ago. Having wandered southern China for over twenty years through hardships and changes, he remains convinced that with words as companions, the heart never grows lonely nor the soul homeless.
